In the twenty-first century, a computer is no longer optional when it comes to academic success—it is mandatory. Typically, only 38% of the youth we serve will continue their education beyond high school or completion of their GED. City Youth Now realizes that access to technology is a major player in encouraging academic success.
In years prior, City Youth Now received numerous requests for new or used laptops for youth who were beating the odds to continue their education. Unfortunately, we had to turn down hundreds of these requests due to the high cost of obtaining individual computers. With our new partnership with Redemtech, Independent Living Skills Program, and Tech Connect and a generous grant from The John Burton Foundation, City Youth Now is now able to fulfill these requests and offer these youth an important tool to point them towards success.
Applications for the laptop program may be submitted on behalf of the youth by a probation officer, social worker, CASA, attorney, or other adult authorized by the court to provide services to youth. Note that requests are not accepted directly from youth or their caregivers. To find out if your youth is eligible, please check out the eligibility requirements.
Apply for a laptop computer for your youth. We are accepting applications through January 26, 2009 and are extending the program to college-bound high school seniors.
Redemtech provides Technology Change Management services to businesses to handle their technology deployment, reutilization, re-marketing and retirement. Redemtech creates an efficient channel for used computers stockpiled in corporate enterprises to reach needy schools, non-profits and charities across the globe—thereby benefiting the environment as well by giving new life to computers that may otherwise be destined for disposal.

TechConnect is a citywide initiative to address the technology needs of San Francisco's underserved communities. The TechConnect Digital Inclusion programs provide ways for San Franciscans to access the Internet, to more easily obtain a computer for their home, and the training and support needed to use technology to better their lives.
The John Burton Foundation for Children Without Homes was founded in 2004 by retired President Pro Tem of the California State Senate John Burton. Through the Foundation, Senator Burton promotes the values of nurturing children and youth who are less fortunate in life than most. His vision is the Foundation's mission: dedicated to improving the quality of life for California's homeless children and developing policy solutions to prevent homelessness.
90% youth indicated that they had attempted to secure a laptop through the system, scholarship opportunities, or relatives at least once over the past 18 months without success.
