The San Francisco Exploratorium makes "gack" with the maximum security unit of the San Francisco Youth Guidance Center

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — October 23, 2007 — City Youth Now sponsored a visit by the San Francisco Exploratorium to the Maximum Security Unit at the Youth Guidance Center. During the 2 hour workshop, students first learned about the differences and interactions between color, pigment, and light, and then got to experiment with their new knowledge by making colored "gack" and iridescent prints. City Youth Now and the Exploratorium will be teaming up in the future to bring more "messy science" to the younger residents of the YGC.

About the Outreach Program at the Exploratorium
Since 1984, the Children's Educational Outreach Program has been a link between the Exploratorium and community-based organizations in San Francisco and Oakland that serve inner-city children, teens, and their families. The Outreach Program offers Exploratorium exhibit-based educational activities via ongoing partnerships with these organizations. Outreach Program staff go out to neighborhood programs on a regular basis, as well as inviting participants to the Exploratorium for special field trips and, in some cases, extended study.

About City Youth Now
Founded in 1950, City Youth Now provides a wide range of services and support for youth in the juvenile court system-including youth in the foster care and/or delinquency systems. Current examples include: Author Visits to Juvenile Hall, a Corner Store at Youth Guidance Center, Holiday Gifts for thousands of children each year, an Internship Program for youth on probation, Jesse E. Williams III Scholarship Fund, Project KEEP, and Squires Program.
