INDIVIDUAL GRANTS Personal Development

Remember how exciting it was to get ready for the championship game?
Or perform on stage for the first time?
Sometimes the most basic things can make a difference in a child's
life-- learning to play the guitar, singing in the choir, taking
karate classes or taking up a new hobby.
City Youth Now provides funds for youth in the foster care and
delinquency systems to participate in these types of personal
development activities. We provide funding for the classes, uniforms
or supplies necessary to help youth find something that will make
them feel better about themselves and positive about their futures.

Diana, age 5, was a victim of abuse until age 3. After her mother
failed to separate from the abuser, Diana was removed from the home
and placed in foster care, and finally put in long-term placement
with her grandmother. Her grandmother is over 60, has no income,
and is in poor health. City Youth Now helps pay for Diana's weekly
ice skating lessons.
According to her CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Lee,
The lessons give her an opportunity to spend quality time
with her mother (from whom she has been separated by the dependency
court). They have a grand time together. Diana glows in the praise
of her teacher who says she is very good and learns very fast.
And, she enjoys the company of girls with similar interests.
