SAN FRANCISCO, CA—December 16, 2009—Last week, the residents of Log Cabin Ranch accompanied by their teachers from Log Cabin high School, counseling staff from Log Cabin Ranch, the Log Cabin Ranch Librarian, and City Youth Now went on a field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
As part of their high school curriculum, the young men spent the day identifying sea life, learning about habitats and feeding patterns of various fish, and exploring the Seahorse exhibit. The youth participated in the Kelp Forest and feeding lessons, where they learned about ocean terrains. All of the young men found a niche at the aquarium, from marveling at the movements of the large octopus, to the playful banter of the sea otters. The young men hesitantly approached the tide pool exhibit as they touched and viewed star fish, sea cucumbers, and bat rays for the first time in their young lives. They were particularly taken a back by the unique life story of the seahorse male who becomes pregnant and gives birth to sea horse babies.
The trip was a huge success, and appreciated by the grateful young detainees who not only learned about the mysteries of the sea but spent a day off-site in a new environment.
