SAN FRANCISCO, CA—December 1, 2009—This month, City Youth Now, If These Walls Could Talk and Woodside Learning Center are teaming up with National Public Radio's Generation Public Radio Exchange. NPR first showed interest in our youth poets earlier this year through the website IfTheseWallsCouldTalk.org which hosts poetry created by youth detained at the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Center.
City Youth Now, in collaboration with the Woodside Learning Center, was invited to participate in NPR's Generation PRX youth editorial board which is a writing workshop roundtable. The group consists of three youth who write reviews of audio pieces produced by other youth. The participating youth detained at the Juvenile Justice Center are reviewing pieces posted on the If These Walls Could Talk website.
Under the supervision and guidance of Woodside Learning Center teachers, the detained youth participants are writing, reading and recording their poetry as well as reviewing other youth's work. The Generation PRX youth board project is meant to engage the youth participants in a 3-month opportunity to weigh in, in a supervised and constructive way, as to how other youth writers submitting works to NPR are writing. Their reviews and responses help determine what will be featured on the youth producer website. The hope is that each youth's participation will help them develop reading skills, computer literacy, reflective and critical thinking about how people write.
This is an exciting opportunity, and unique collaboration that fosters team work, develops writing and editing skills, and promotes positive critical thinking skills. The work can be viewed at http://generation.prx.org/yeb.
The Youth Editorial Board (YEB) is a rotating group of three youth responsible for writing reviews of audio pieces produced by youth (YEB members write reviews of adult pieces too, but their priority is youth-produced audio). YEB members serve for three months, and receive support, training and a stipend for their reviews. http://generation.prx.org/yeb
