SAN FRANCISCO, CA—April 3, 2009—On Friday, April 3rd, the San Francisco Gap, Inc. First Friday's volunteer team collaborated with City Youth Now at the Juvenile Justice Center. Seventeen Gap employees equipped with garden gloves, shovels, and various tools spent the afternoon clearing the hillside at the Juvenile Justice Center for a gardening program that will go into effect this fall. The gardening program will be part of the City Youth Now internship program for youth to learn about horticulture. This is a project in collaboration with Focus and the Juvenile Probation Department.
The First Friday of every month, this team of volunteers led by Bill Tompkins and orchestrated by Lily Wu gives back to the community. More employees of Gap, Inc. will be assisting City Youth Now throughout the month of April by clearing the hillsides and soil beds at the Juvenile Justice Center so that the gardening project can be launched this fall. City Youth Now is also working on a horticulture therapy program for the youth detained at the Juvenile Justice Center. For more information on this program, or to get involved, please contact Elizabeth Fairbanks at 415-753-7576 or via email at elizabeth@cityyouthnow.org.
