PRESS RELEASE: Don't Give Up— Author Jeff Rivera Shares His Story With Detained Youth

SAN FRANCISCO, CA—August 12, 2008—During summer break, City Youth Now sponsored a visit by author Jeff Rivera to the San Francisco Juvenile Justice Center. Rivera had the opportunity to speak with all six units at the Juvenile Justice Center as well as the youth at Log Cabin Ranch about his book, Forever My Lady. Rivera interacted with, and inspired youth with his stories.

Growing up in a dysfunctional family, Rivera first began writing at the age of six as a way of releasing the pressure of his situation. Rivera shared parts of his childhood during which he lived with his mother, brother, and three pets in their car in Las Vegas. Rivera went on to explain to the detained youth how he actively made the decision to turn his seemingly hopeless situation into something positive by taking his writing seriously. Rivera wanted to write about things that people could relate to and inspire others. He encouraged the youth to realize that when something is difficult, turn it into something positive, because at the end of the day it's about the choices YOU make. He continued, Even if you have to take that job at Kmart you hate, with the boss you can't stand, stick to it. Do anything you can to reach your goal; listen to your heart and follow your dreams. DON'T GIVE UP.

The story line for Forever My Lady is loosely based on Rivera's own life. It is a meaningful and moving story that leaves the reader in suspense at the end and eager to read the next two books in the series that Rivera will be publishing in the near future. At the end of the discussion, many youth were interested in writing their own interpretations of what should happen in the future books and offering suggestions to the author.
