INDIVIDUAL GRANTS — Independent Living

Imagine yourself at the age of 18—expected to support yourself in a city as expensive as San Francisco. This is what happens to hundreds of youth every year as they "age out" of the foster care system. Unlike most kids, these youth do not have families that will continue to support them past their 18th birthday.

Not surprisingly, the rates of homelessness and adult incarceration among former foster youth is remarkably high. Several years ago, City Youth Now expanded its mission to include this extremely vulnerable population of recently "emancipated" youth.

City Youth Now grants in this area have made a significant difference in the lives of several young people attempting to make the transition to independence.

Spotlight

Marie was essentially raised by the foster care and juvenile justice systems. After she turned 18, Marie found herself pregnant and on her own. Marie's childhood was filled with trauma and she was not necessarily ready to be independent. Unfortunately, she did not have a choice.

Luckily, Marie was accepted into First Place Fund for Youth's supportive housing program in Oakland, which provided her with an apartment she could afford along with an array of supportive services.

City Youth Now supporters responded immediately to our call for help and provided Marie with most of the essentials she needed to move in to her new place. Thank you!
